4 May 2013 — A Benchmark Day for QYC
We started the day with our inaugural Flag Raising. Quantico Town Mayor, the Honorable Kevin Brown, and Rev Roger E. VanDerWerken, CDR, USN, joined me and the SEA SCOUTS of Ship 100 to raise our country’s colors and kick-off the 2013 boating season. SEA SCOUTS Michael Kennedy, Elijah Potts, Ryan Stark, did a grand job as our color guard and Rev VanDerWerken made sure we had our sea legs by leading the crowd in the Navy Hymn. With the ringing of the bell, our season began with the skipper’s meeting for the SPRING TUNE UP Regatta. Rev VanDerWerken blessed the fleet as boats went out for the race and our focus on land turned to the Open House.
This was our third Open House and our first teamed with the Town of Quantico, utilizing both marina and the town park areas. On the marina side we had US Coast Guard axillary and the Mid-Potomac Power Squadron conducting Vessel Safety Checks and providing boaters with educational materials and hands-on training on VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) use. We had to cancelled our planned flare demonstrations because of wind conditions. On the park side, visitors enjoyed music and food provided by Quantico’s own SAM’S Grill and La Reveille Coffee Shop and wraps while visiting tables setup by the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society; American Red Cross; SEA SCOUTS of Ship 212; CAREFREE Boating; Quantum Sails; True Heading Marine Surveyors; Potomac River Yacht Club Association; and the Quantico Yacht Club. Kids young and old enjoyed the town docks where we had Prince William County and Charles County Marine Units. TOWBOATUS joined us late in the day. Throughout the early afternoon, guest enjoyed the wonderful town park and watched the sailboats racing in the SPRING TUNE UP. We ended the day with a few casual cruises and simply enjoyed the weather and easterly winds.
Our success can be measured by more than just “we had a great day.” The QYC gained two new full memberships with a third expected this Friday at our meeting as well as at least one Associate membership. The marina, while limited in direct participation, reaped the benefit our QYC drawn visitors by adding new slip contracts. Finally, we ended the day with Music Maker, Viento Libre, and Rhumb Runner each taking guests out for an afternoon sail.
