You will find fun for the whole family at Quantico Yacht Club’s open house in the Town of Quantico, Virginia from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3rd

The Quantico Yacht Club, in cooperation with  MCB Quantico Marina and the Town of Quantico, is celebrating its Open House on 3 May 12PM to 5PM.  This fourth annual QYC Open House kicks-off the 2014 boating season and is open to the entire MCBQ family and the general public.  Our objectives are to promote safe, fun, family activities on and near the Potomac River while highlighting what the local area has to offer.

The day starts with our flag raising with a SEA SCOUT SHIP 100 Color Guard at the QYC clubhouse at 0845, followed by a blessing of the fleet and the inaugural OCEAN RESEARCH PROJECT Regatta (2014 Ocean Research Project NOR).  The OCEAN RESEARCH PROJECT (http://oceanresearchproject.org/about-u/) was founded by solo circumnavigator of the Americas, Matt Rutherford, who will be conducting a Trans-Pacific plastic pollution survey this spring and summer.  It is the first ever continent-to-continent marine debris survey to collect data on our oceans’ most dangerous problems:  chemical pollution, micro-plastics, ocean acidification and biodiversity loss.  The Regatta is a Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) sailboat race starting around 1000 and we encourage all sail boaters to participate.  If you don’t have a PHRF, the QYC staff will work with you to establish an appropriate value for this race.

The Open House begins at 1200 and continues until 1700.   We’ll have food and refreshments as well as picnic areas and there’s a MOONBOUNCE for the kids.  Scheduled activities include selected boats open for viewing, US Coast Guard Auxiliary courtesy safety checks and safety equipment demonstrations.  We’ll have information tables from organizations including the Sea Scouts, Prince William County Sheriff’s Marine Unit, Charles County MD Sheriff’s Marine Unit, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, MCBQ Fire Department, Marine Corps Community Services, Mid-Potomac Power Squadron, American Red Cross, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Potomac River Yachting Association, and  Armed Forces Motorsports Foundation.  We will conclude the day by offering complementary sails on the river.

In addition to the Open House, the Town of Quantico is hosting a fishing tournament and the Prince William Model Railroad Association will have their monthly open house in the Quantico Train Station.  We hope to see you as we enjoy the day along the Potomac River.
